Amazon main image requirements and common mistakes

How to spot off-white backgrounds, clipped products and low-resolution sources before uploading a batch.

ShopCutout · Updated ·

Your Amazon main image should show shoppers exactly what they will receive. Start with a photo of the complete product, remove the original background, and review the finished image at full size. Check the requirements for your marketplace and product category before uploading.

Check the background, framing and resolution

Amazon's product image requirements call for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) and a product that fills at least 85% of the frame under the general main image guidance. Keep the whole product visible and avoid added graphics, watermarks or props that are separate from the purchase.

Amazon's seller guidance on image types gives 1000 pixels on the longest side for zoom and recommends 1600 pixels or more. Check your category's guidance for any specific requirements.

Fix three common problems before exporting

  • The corners look white but gray remains inside a handle. Apply a pure white background, then zoom in on handles, straps and other gaps. An automated outer-background check only measures outside the detected subject.
  • The product looks centered but part of it is missing. Compare the result with the original. If the original crops the product at the edge, start with an uncropped photo. If only the result loses detail, try another cutout and compare the edges again.
  • The output is large but the label looks blurry. Exporting at 2000 × 2000 cannot recover detail from a small original. Use a sharper photo with the product occupying more of the original frame.

Run a batch preflight

Open the Amazon main image tool, add up to 20 photos, and process them using the white-background preset. Its 87% target estimates the longest side of the detected subject relative to the canvas. Select Check processed photos to scan the batch, then click any filename to review its result. Run the check again after changing the background or reprocessing a photo.

Add optional SKU prefixes to keep downloads organized. The ZIP contains the processed files and a JSON report for each included image. Check your upload method's filename rules separately, then inspect the final photos for accurate color, the complete product and any category-specific details.
